  2003 Exhibition (The 38th Hong Kong Products Expo)
 
A Parade of Brands at Victoria

Organized by the Association, the 38th Hong Kong Products Expo (HKPE) was held between 13 December 2003 and 1 January 2004 at Victoria Park. Around 300 exhibitors took part in the 20-day Expo, showcasing and selling a wide spectrum of high quality products at 600 indoor and outdoor booths. Under the theme "Parade of Brands at Victoria", the 38 HKPE aimed at encouraging local enterprises to create and develop their own brands and to enhance the standards and recognition of Hong Kong's industry. The Expo this year again achieved huge success with an attendance of over 1.85 million visitors.

With enormous support from various sectors, the Expo was supported by the Commerce, Industry and Technology Bureau, Trade and Industry Department, and Leisure and
Cultural Services Department of the HKSAR Government, Hong Kong Tourism Board, Hong Kong Productivity Council, Hong Kong Trade Development Council, Hong Kong Arts Development Council, The Chinese General Chamber of Commerce, The Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce, Federation of Hong Kong Industries, The Hong Kong Chinese Enterprises Association and Industrial Association of Macau.

Featuring Famous Local Brands in "HK Brandnames Square"
The "HK Brandnames Square" covered a total area of 8,000 square metres, with 120 standard outdoor booths showcasing 60 quality brands. Exhibitors were from traditional Hong Kong companies and recently emerged local enterprises. Their brands were well-known to the public, such as Goodway, AXE, Lion & Globe, Mixed Congee, Eu Yan Sang, Han Sheng Tang, Herbalgy, Imperial Bird's, Home of Swallows, Lucky Bakery, Sau San Tong, etc. This feature indicated that more and more Hong Kong enterprises were keen to develop their own brands. In the "HK Brandnames Square", a 14-metre-diameter dome was set up with an Expo Live Broadcast Station. Exhibiting the Expo's history, interesting news and old photos, the dome was the landmark as well as the focus of the Expo. Decorated as old streets of Hong Kong, the "Classic Brands Gallery" was set up again to refresh the old memories of visitors. The Gallery showcased exhibitors from traditional brands including Hang Heung, Wing Wah, Two Girls Brand, Po Sang Yuen, Yeung Ng Tong, etc.

In addition to the "HK Brandnames Square", this year's Expo also comprised the popular "Food Plaza", "Fun Fun World" and "Living Zone". "Fun Fun World — Green Christmas Carnival" was established for the first time for teenagers and children. Exciting game booths were set up and visitors had the chance to win over 10,000 attractive prizes and to enter a super lucky draw. Covering an area of 4,000 square metres, the "Living Zone" featured 130 standard booths with a wide spectrum of products, which included foodstuffs, gifts, pharmaceutical products, skin care products, furniture, household products, electrical appliances, leather goods, etc.

"Global Brands Pavilion" was a new zone established to provide an effective channel for overseas brands to explore the local market or even the Mainland market. The Pavilion covered a total area of 2,500 square metres, with 60 standard outdoor booths showcasing 30 quality brands including Trumpet Brand Seirogan from Japan, Edo Pack, Seaw
eed and Kimchi from Korea, Arawana Brand, Hsu Fu Chi, 999 Dr Health Series and PHY from Mainland China, Mr Brown and Hsin Tung Yang from Taiwan, Sealect Tuna & Salmon Snackit from Thailand, Pensonic from Malaysia, TCBY, Wilsonart and Quaker from the USA, and German Pool and Faber-Castell from Germany.

In view of the increasing number of exhibitors from the noodle industry joining the Expo in recent years, a "Chinese Noodles Street" was newly established with the aim of promoting and enhancing the standards and recognition of the flourishing noodle industry. There were eleven such exhibitors which included Sau Tou, AAA Noodle, Triple Noodle, True Taste and Yummy Garden.

On 13 December 2003, CMA President Mr Chan Wing Kee, President-elect cum Chairman of the 38th Hong Kong Products Expo Executive Committee Dr Jose Yu and Advisor of the 38th HKPE Executive Committee Mr Fung Yuen Hon officiated at a flag-raising ceremony to mark the opening of the 20-day Expo. Kicked off by the speech of CMA President Mr Chan Wing Kee, the opening ceremony of the 38th HKPE was held right after the flag-raising ceremony. A number of distinguished guests were invited to officiate at the ribbon-cutting ceremony, including the Honourable Tung Chee-hwa, Chief Executive of HKSAR; Mr Gao Si Ren, Director of Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in HKSAR; Mr Yang Wen Chang, Commissioner of the Chinese Commissioner's Office of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the PRC in HKSAR; Mr Stephen Ip, Secretary for Economic Development and Labour; Mr John Tsang, Secretary for Commerce, Industry and Technology; CMA P

During the Expo, many senior government officials and leading figures from various sectors of the community visited the Expo upon invitation of the Association, including Financial Secretary of the HKSAR Government the Honourable Henry Tong. Director of Social Welfare Mr Paul Tang, accompanied by CMA Ladies" Committee Chairlady Mrs Rita Sin, Vice-Chairlady Mrs Nora Cheung and Recreational Officer Ms Shirley Wu officiated at the launching ceremony of the thematic day, "Let's Relax with Your Family". A fund-raising event " Charity Auction for Society for Abandoned Animals was staged on 26 December. Famous artiste Ms Sheila Chin and DJ Mr Fung Chi Fung were invited as guest MCs; Mr Louie Castro as guest auctioneer; 2T" Maggie and Mandy, and Koey as guests of the event.
Like previous Expos, a number of key programmes such as the Hong Kong Top Ten Brandnames Awards, Miss Exhibition Pageant, Booth Design Competition, Photo Contest and Children's Drawing Competition were organized. In addition, "Better Hong Kong Wall Painting Competition" was firstly held and invited secondary school students to participate in creating the largest wall painting in Hong Kong. A wide variety of performances including sports games, pop concerts, acrobatics and magic shows, music and dancing performances were staged to match the following nine thematic days: "Let's Relax with Your Family", "Senior Citizen Day", "Brand's Day", "Christmas Eve", "Caring Day", "X'mas Loving Day", "Sports & Healthcare Day", "Arts & Culture Day" and "New Year's Eve".

The Expo also staged a Wishing Garden for visitors to pray for blessing for the New Year. Contributions from wish-makers were donated to Project ORBIS International Inc.

The Magic of New Year
Organized by the Association and solely sponsored by Goodway Household Appliance, the spotlight programme of the 38the HKPE "The Magic of New Year" was staged on 31 December 2003 to celebrate the dawn of the New Year. Spectacular stage effects and decorations including laser show, water screen and pyrotechnic display were synchronized with large-scale dance performance, acrobatics and magic show.
The countdown ceremony was officiated by CMA President-elect cum Chairman of the 38th Hong Kong Products Expo Executive Committee Dr Jose Yu and Managing Director of Goodway Electrical Enterprise Ltd Mr Choi Lung Wai. The entire park was brightened up by a spectacular show of fireworks, laser lights, water fountains, all synchronized with music, showcasing a magnificent display of fire and water.

1. Miss Exhibition Pageant
As one of the traditional programme highlights of the Expo, Miss Exhibition Pageant aims to select goodwill ambassadors to help promote Hong Kong's industry by participation in publicity activities organized by the CMA. A media conference was held on 5 December 2003 to introduce the ten contestants to the public. au of Queens Health Beverage Co, Ms Mandy Lam of Sam Lee Lon Noodles Mfy, Ms Ng Sze Wan of Imperial Bird's Nest Int'l Co Ltd, Ms Sandy Ma of Lo Hong Ka Birdnests Wholesale Ltd, Ms Kennix Ho of Truth and Faith Int'l Ltd, Ms JoJo Lee of Wellink Food Co Ltd, Ms Michelle Lam of Tak Hung Hong Int'l Co Ltd and Ms Michelle Lao of Goodway Electrical Enterprise Ltd.

This year, the Pageant adopted a series of unprecedented and large scale promotional activities which were firstly held on cruise, tram and helicopter. The performance of contestants in these three publicity events, together with the polling results of the Expo's visitors, were taken into account in the final grading. The winners of the Miss Exhibition Pageant were selected according to their manner, communication skills, appearance and knowledge about their companies" business and products as well as Hong Kong's industry.
"HKPE Ambassadors" Miss Lily Li and Mr Lin Chih Hao attended the media conference of the Miss Exhibition Pageant and assisted in promoting Hong Kong Products Expo. Famous artistes Miss Jacqueline Law and Mr Derek To selected the winners of "The Media's Favoured Miss Exhibition Award" and "The Best Eloquence Award" in the promotional activities respectively. To enhance the contestants" performance, CMA invited celebrities including Mr Wong Kwai Lam, Miss Lily Li, Ms Strisan Chan, Ms Kate Chan, Mr Jonathan Kwong and Dr Lawrence Chan as official trainers and image consultants to give lectures on eloquence, poise and catwalk, make-up, image design, hair styling and posturing before camera.

The Pageant received huge support from sponsors. Modern Beauty Salon (H
K) Ltd and Angel Slimming and Beauty Group were appointed as the official fitness center to provide fitness training and the spa center respectively. Shimmer New York and hairConcept@W1 were appointed as the official cosmetics and official hair design respectively. Moreover, Charles Chan, Ip & Fung CPA Ltd was invited as the official honourable auditors to assist in counting on-site and on-line public votes on the contestants of the Pageant. For sponsorship of the contestants' costume, CMA expressed gratitude to Yue Hwa Chinese Products Emporium Ltd for providing cheong-sams and Veeko International Holdings Ltd for outfits for the contestants. Circle Shoes Co Ltd provided lady shoes for the contestants. SuperStar Leo of Star Cruises and Helicopters Hong Kong Ltd sponsored the venues for the media conferences of the Expo.

On 1 January 2004, the results of Miss Exhibition Pageant were announced and the prize presentation ceremony was then held at the exhibition venue. The championship went to Ms Michelle Lao who was crowned by CMA President Dr Jose Yu and the champion of the 37th Miss Exhibition Pageant Ms Candy Lee. The first runner-up was Ms Kennix Ho who was crowned by Vice-President Mr Lam Hok Po and the first runner-up of the 37th Miss Exhibition Pageant Ms Yannie Yuen. Ms Joey Lee, the second runner-up, was crowned by Vice-President Mr Chow Yun Sheung and the second runner-up of the 37th Miss Exhibition Pageant Ms Sheila Lam. Ms Joanne Yau was awarded as "The Most Popular Miss Exhibition On-line Award" by Honorary President Mr Yip Hing Chung. The title-winners would play the role of goodwill ambassadors to assist CMA in promoting Hong Kong's industry in the coming future.

Prize Presentation Ceremony of Miss Exhibition Pageant
During the prize presentation ceremony of Miss Exhibition Pageant, the champion Ms Michelle Lao and the first runner-up Ms Kennix Ho were awarded a cash prize of HK$60,000 and HK$40,000 respectively by Han Sheng Tang Herbal Technologies Co Ltd, and the second runner-up Ms Joey Lee was awarded a cash prize of HK$20,000 by CMA. 2. Booth Design Competition
The Booth Design Competition has been one of the highlights of the HKPE since its inception. As preceding Expos, this year the Association staged the competition to give recognition to the exhibitors for their outstanding booth designs. CMA invited representatives from eight supporting organizations as judges of the competition. They included General Manager of Destination Marketing of Hong Kong Tourism Board Mr Lambert Chan, General Manager of Corporate Communications and Events of Hong Kong Productivity Council Ms Betty Lee, Head of Design of Hong Kong Trade Development Council Mr Matthew Leung, Chief Executive of Hong Kong Arts Development Council Mr Albert Lam, Vice-Chairman of Young Executives" Sub-committee of The Chinese General Chamber of Commerce Mr Peter Tse, Director of Design Protection Centre of Federation of Hong Kong Industries Mr Liu Kwok Bond, General Manager of Chamber Services of The Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce Ms Connie Kwok and Vice- Chairman and Chief Executive of The Hong Kong Chinese Enterprises Association Mr Zhou Jie. On 13 December 2003, the judges visited the booths for assessment. Finally, three winners were chosen according to the selection criteria: overall design, product display and integration of booth design with product features for the best effect.

Goodway Electrical Enterprise Ltd won the championship for its spectacular booth design as European castle. Hop Hing Oils and Fats Ltd awarded the first runner-up for its simple and clear booth design. Lam Soon Hong Kong Group awarded the second runner-up by using a riot of colour and large product props to highlight its product characteristics. The prize presentation ceremony of the competition was held on 1 January at the exhibition venue.

3. Photo Contest
To enhance public understanding and awareness of the Expo and Hong Kong's industry, CMA continued to organize the Photo Contest in the 38th HKPE, with Ta Kung Pao, the Photographic Society of Hong Kong and the Chinese Photographic Society of Hong Kong as co-organizers. The response to the Contest was overwhelming with over 700 photos featuring a wide variety of topics including Miss Exhibition Pageant contestants, specially decorated booths, spectacular performances, crowding scenes, pyrotechnic display and night view of the Expo received. The Contest included three top prizes and ten merit-prizes. The champion, first runner-up and second runner-up were each awarded a trophy, a cash prize of HK$6,000, HK$4,000 and HK$2,000 respectively. Each merit-prize winner was awarded a certificate and a cash prize of HK$1,000.

Chaired by CMA General Committee Member Mr Fung Yuen Hon, the judging panel for the Contest consisted of renowned photographers Mr Kan Hing Foh, Dr Leo Wong, Mr Wong Siu Kan, Editor of the photography page of Ta Kung Pao Mr Lau Pui Hang, Chairman of the Photographic Society of Hong Kong Mr Lin Dung Leung, and Honorary Chairman of the Chinese Photographic Association of Hong Kong Mr Ng Lin Sing.

4. Children's Drawing Competition
To enhance public understanding of the 38th HKPE, the Children's Drawing Competition was organized again with Sing Tao Daily as co-organizer. Children under the age of 12 were eligible to join the competition with the theme "The HKPE in My View". Held from 22 to 29 December amid Christmas and New Year Holidays, the competition received enthusiastic response from the public with more than 1,200 high standard entries.

Chaired by CMA General Committee Member Mr Lee Hung Tong, the judging panel for the competition comprised Creative Director of Sing Tao Newspaper Group Limited Mr Danny Wong, Chief Executive Officer of Excel Success (Hong Kong) Limited Ms Serena Law, Head of Design of Hong Kong Trade Development Council Mr Matthew Leung, Director of Creative Services of Ogilvy & Mather Advertising Ms Candy Tam, and Art Director of Emphasis Custom Media Ms Teresita Khaw. Sponsored by Luk Ka International Limited, A W Faber-Castell (HK) Limited, Excel Success (Hong Kong) Limited, Sino United Publishing (Holdings) Limited and Sun Ya Publications (HK) Limited, the competition was divided into two sections: Junior Section (age 8 or below) and Senior Section (age 8 to 12), each with three top prizes and five consolation prizes. The champion and the runners-up of both categories were each awarded a trophy, a cash prize of HK$1,000, HK$500 and HK$300, art products of HK$500 and HK$400, a book coupon of HK$500, HK$400 and HK$300 and a gift pack respectively. Consolation prizes winners were each awarded a certificate, art products of HK$300 and HK$200, a book coupon of HK$200 and a gift pack.

The prize presentation ceremony of the Photo Contest and Children's Drawing Competition was held on 14 February. CMA Vice-President Mr Chow Yun Sheung was invited to address the event and present trophies to judges and representatives of co-organizers and sponsors of both competitions. Other CMA guest included General Committee Member Mr Lee Hung Tong.

5. Better Hong Kong Wall Painting Competition
In order to strengthen the teenagers" sense of local belonging, to develop their positive attitude towards life, and to enhance their understanding of the Expo, CMA organized a wall painting competition with a theme of "Better Hong Kong" in the 38th HKPE for the first time. All students from secondary schools and tertiary institutes in Hong Kong were invited to enter the Competition. The Competition was co-organised by Mingpao.com Limited and was sponsored by the Better Hong Kong Foundation and the China Paint Mfg Co (1946) Ltd. The response to the Competition was overwhelming with nearly a hundred of entries received. The works of the participants were of high standard with excellent use of colour. The Competition had three top prizes and five merit-prizes. The champion, first runner-up and second runner-up were each awarded a trophy, a cash prize of $5,000, HK$3,000 and HK$2,000 respectively. Each merit-prize winners was awarded a plaque and a cash prize of HK$1,000.

Gratitude Dinner
To express sincere gratitude to the support for the 38th HKPE from various sectors, CMA hosted a Gratitude Dinner on 13 January, 2004 at Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Director-General of Trade and Industry Mr Kevin Ho was invited as the Guest-of-Honor of the dinner.

CMA President Dr Jose Yu thanked for the support from the supporting organizations of the Expo, while Honorary Presidents Mr Yip Hing Chung, Mr Lo Man Tuen and Dr Yung Yau presented souvenirs to their representatives including Director-General of Trade and Industry Mr Kevin Ho, District Leisure Manager (Eastern) of Leisure and Cultural Services Department Mr Liu Wai Shing, Executive Director of Hong Kong Productivity Council Mr Yeung Kwok Keung, External Relations Manager of Hong Kong Trade Development Council Mr Stephen Liang, General Committee of the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce Mr Andrew Yuen, Director of Design Protection Centre of Federation of Hong Kong Industries Mr Liu Kwok Bond, Vice-Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Chinese Enterprises Association Mr He Tongbao, and Vice-President of Industrial Association of Macau Mr Chan Chon. During the dinner, the champion of Miss Exhibition Pageant Ms Michelle Lao and the first runner-up Ms Kennix Ho sang songs and the second runner-up Ms Joey Lee played magic. Also, pop singer Mr Jack Wu was invited to perform during the dinner. Other guests attending the dinner included judges of all competitions, representatives from sponsors and exhibitors.
