Territory-Wide Support for HKPE

The 34th Hong Kong Products Expo (the 34th HKPE), organized by the Chinese Manufacturers’ Association of Hong Kong (CMA), was held from December 11, 1999 to January 2, 2000 at Tamar Site. Over 700 indoor and outdoor booths were set up at the Expo, displaying and selling a wide spectrum of high-quality goods. CMA invited HKSAR Industry Department as sponsor, Hong Kong Tourist Association, Hong Kong Productivity Council, Hong Kong Trade Development Council, The Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce, The Chinese General Chamber of Commerce, Federation of Hong Kong Industries, The Hong Kong Chinese Enterprises Association, Industrial Association of Macau and The Small and Medium Enterprises Association of Macau as co-organizers. Succeeding the tradition of the preceding Expos, the 34th HKPE continued to promote Hong Kong's manufacturing industry and to provide a shopping paradise for the public and overseas tourists. On December 11, 1999, CMA President Mr Chan Wing Kee, Chairman of the Expo Standing Committee Mr Leung Nai Wing, together with General Committee Member and Chairman of the Publicity Sub-committee of the 34th HKPE Mr Fung Yuen Hon officiated a flag-raising ceremony to mark the opening of the 23-day Expo.

The opening ceremony of the 34th HKPE was held right after the flag-raising ceremony. A number of distinguished official leaders were invited to attend the ceremony. They included Vice-Chairman of the National Council of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (NCCPPCC) Dr Henry Fok, HKSAR Chief Executive Mr Tung Chee Hwa, Director of Liaison Office of the Central People's Government Mr Jiang En Zhu, Commissioner of the Chinese Commissioner's Office of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the PRC in HKSAR Mr Ma Yu Zhen, Secretary for Justice Miss Elsie Leung, Secretary for Trade & Industry Mr Chau Tak Hay, Secretary for Economic Service Mr Stephen Ip, Chairman ofthe Board of Cheung Kong (Holdings) Ltd. Dr Li Ka Shing, and Chairperson of the Legislative Council Mrs Rita Fan. Accompanied by CMA President Mr Chan Wing Kee, Assistant to President and Chairman of the Expo Standing Committee Mr Leung Nai Wing and Honorary President Dr Wong Po Yan, these Guests of Honour officiated the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Apart from CMA Vice-Presidents, Honorary Presidents, Executive Committee members, General Committee members and Sub-committee members, guests attending the ceremony also included the HKSAR government's principal officials, senior officials of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government, consular corps and prominent figures of industrial and trade sectors.

During the exhibition, Deputy Commissioner for Commissioner's Office of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the PRC in HKSAR Mr Liu Hong Xiao, Deputy Director of Liaison Office of the Central People's Government Mr Liu Shan Zai, Financial Secretary for the HKSAR Government Mr Donald Tsang and Director-General of Trade Mr Joshua Law visited the HKPE.
